Keeping with my now 12 year tradition of theming years, I present 2021 as
The Year of The Root
2020 was a forest fire. Wild. Unplanned. Unwieldy. 2020 burned through our institutions, communities, and daily routines with wanton abandon. The year's blaze turned to ashes the rhythms and relationships of our lives. And as 2020’s flames danced and darted, engulfing our sense of normal, we adopted new routines and adapted to new normals.
The aftermath of wildfires is a forest that is left burned and charred, yet brimming with potential. For the soil is now rich with fresh fertilizing materials and there is space for new life, new possibilities, and new growth to take root.
Roots, the hidden and iconic parts of plants that draw nourishment from the ground and sustain life. Strong roots grow strong stems and support robust foliage. Roots are integral to plants’ growth and their ability to weather stressors, shocks, and the changing seasons.
As the "Year of the Root", let 2021 be the year we develop, invest, and strengthen the roots that will support our post-2020 growth and resiliency. In a concrete sense, "Year of the Root” entails investing in the people and relationships that sustained us during the lockdowns of 2020. It involves actively participating in communities that provided us emotional and supportive safety nets. It means engaging in activities that brought us moments of joy and put smiles on our faces. When we are purposeful in deepening our roots, we increase our sources of nourishment for the soul. We also empower ourselves and others to be resilient in the face of a changing world.
2021. The Year of the Root! The post-2020 growth we love to see. And we all deserve.
With love,
Happy New Year Everyone!
